{"id":11897,"date":"2010-07-03T08:25:19","date_gmt":"2010-07-03T08:25:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost:8888\/"},"modified":"2021-10-17T11:17:44","modified_gmt":"2021-10-17T11:17:44","slug":"history","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/archive.londonschoolofsamba.co.uk\/?page_id=11897","title":{"rendered":"History"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section bb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; admin_label=&#8221;section&#8221; next_background_color=&#8221;#000000&#8243;][et_pb_row admin_label=&#8221;row&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243;][et_pb_text use_border_color=&#8221;off&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.9&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h1>History of the London School of Samba<\/h1>\n<p>The first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.londonschoolofsamba.co.uk\">London School of Samba<\/a> Carnival Parade at Notting Hill was in honour of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mocidadeindependente.com.br\/\">Mocidade<\/a> our godmother school. \u00a0They were also guests of honour when we played with them at the 3rd European Samba Encontro in London in 1989, and again for our 25th anniversary at Notting Hill Carnival in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Of the drummers who were founding or early members of our School a remarkable number were amongst the best Samba, Salsa or Jazz musicians in this country at the time &#8211; notably <a href=\"http:\/\/www.discogs.com\/artist\/Joao+Bosco+De+Oliveira\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jo\u00e3o Bosco de Oliveira<\/a> (Mestre de bater\u00eda), Robin Jones (who went on to form <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kingsalsa.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">King Salsa<\/a>), Roberta Pla (who formed Valdez, the first Salsa band in London), Alan Hayman, Gerry Hunt, Carlos &amp; Pato Fuentes, Dave Patman, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/lilianachachian\">Liliana Chachian<\/a>, German Santana, Hamish Orr, Dawson Miller and Dave Bitelli amongst others.<\/p>\n<p>LSS played its first official gig at Covent Garden Piazza on April 1st 1984. In August 1984, we were the first Samba School to play at the Notting Hill Carnival and introduced Brazilian Carnival to the parade. Since then, we have achieved the best results so far for any non-Caribbean band in the Notting Hill Carnival (first place in the Samba category in 2009 and 2006 as well as third place overall). For the last five years, we have consistently been in the top ten of all the parading bands in the Notting Hill Carnival.<\/p>\n<p>Our other major <a href=\"https:\/\/londonschoolofsamba.co.uk\/index.php\/gigs\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">performances<\/span><\/strong><\/a> over the last 30 years include concerts throughout the UK and Europe. We welcome new members to our ranks \u2013 join LSS for open access dance and percussion <a href=\"https:\/\/londonschoolofsamba.co.uk\/drumming\/timetable-drumming\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">classes<\/span><\/strong><\/a> in Waterloo every Sunday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Notting Hill Carnival History of Themes for London School of Samba\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We have been parading in the Notting Hill Carnival and another parade since 1984.
