A number of changes were in force this year to try to reduce the risk of spreading coronavirus.Those running in central London had to show a negative lateral flow test for Covid-19.\u00a0 We have so many people waving and cheering us on as we played to weary runners at mile nineteen at the Marathon.\u00a0 Some of the runners even stopped and started to dance some samba in front of the samba band!<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>The London School of Samba were Fantastic!<\/h4>\n<p>Charlotte Buttery, who was running her first marathon to raise money for veterans&#8217; charity <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssafa.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SSAFA<\/a>, said: &#8220;<strong>The London School of Samba band was fantastic &#8211; it&#8217;s amazing that they played for six hours straight to support us runners<\/strong>. Thank you for being there to give me just the lift I needed at a really mentally tough point in the race! The school is extremely proud to have supported and performed at the London Marathon twenty five times!<\/p>\n<h3>New Bateria Director Stacey leads the band for the first time!<\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PYssRvA3MTk\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Another highlight of the London Marathon this year, was Bateria Director Stacey making her debut as leader of the London School of Samba. Stacey did a fantastic job of directing and leading the big band of samba drummers to lift the spirits of the tired runners at mile nineteen of the Marathon.\u00a0 Mestre Fred the current Musical Director said, &#8220;Stacey smashed it out of the park!&#8221;\u00a0 Everyone loved having Stacey leading the band and the crowd loved it!<\/p>\n<h4>New soundsystem, two cavaquinhos and a Puxador at the Marathon!<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-17648 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/londonschoolofsamba.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/PHOTO-2021-10-03-17-26-08.jpg\" alt=\"Greg playing cavaquinho with the London School of Samba at the London Marathon 2021 \" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.londonschoolofsamba.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/PHOTO-2021-10-03-17-26-08.jpg 480w, https:\/\/archive.londonschoolofsamba.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/PHOTO-2021-10-03-17-26-08-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For this year&#8217;s London Marathon, London School of Samba added two guitar players and a singer to the mix!\u00a0 With a with a new portable PA system on the London Marathon route, we were able to sing classic Brasilian Sambas sung in in Portuguese backed by two cavaquinhos (small four string Brazilian guitars) that are similar in size too a ukulele.\u00a0 Greg Cowan, who played the cavaquinho at the gig, said: &#8220;Having a PA this year really changed the energy for both dancers and bateria, allowing us to be able to perform sambas with cavaquinhos as well as verbal cheering on individual runners with 7 miles to go on their incredible effort was absolutely amazing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h5>Cavaquinhos &#8211; small Brazilian guitar<\/h5>\n<p>Cavaquinhos are an essential and authentic Brazilian instrument in the samba, bringing a distinctive high pitched swinging melody line and a rhythmic chord backing to the vocals which accompany sung Sambas like \u201csamba de Enredo\u201d (stories \/ anthems) and samba songs; \u201csambas de can\u00e7\u00e3o\u201d &#8211; these are two kinds of Brazilian samba we play, besides batucada, at London School of Samba.<\/p>\n<p>Cavaquinhos have been part of the school since its beginnings in 1984, especially for accompanying the annual Notting Hill Carnival samba enredo song. The cavaquinho originates from (Braga) Portugal and blended &#8211; with Portuguese culture, slavery and anti-slavery resistance culture &#8211; into Afro-Brazilian culture. The samba music of resistance to slavery incorporates global influences.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having the new soundsystem, the two cavaquinhos and a singer was one of the highlights of the year&#8217;s marathon.\u00a0 It allowed us to add even more energy and excitement of a Rio carnival to all the runners as they passed us at mile nineteen.\u00a0 This year was a special year for the London School of Samba, and we look forwards to seeing you next year at the London Marathon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5 class=\"p1\">Results for the London Marathon 2021<\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The race is famous for the amount of amateur runners it attracts, many of whom run in fancy dress in aid of charity.\u00a0 Here are the results from the Virgin Money London Marathon 2021.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marcelhug.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marcel Hug<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manuelaschaer.ch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Manuela Schar<\/a> won the wheelchair races in course-record times.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sisay_Lemma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sisay Lemma<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/jepkosgei36\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joyciline Jepkosgei<\/a> won the elite races.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5>The slowest ever finisher at the London Marathon<\/h5>\n<p>Now we know who won the London Marathon, do you know who was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefocus.news\/sports\/what-is-the-slowest-ever-london-marathon-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">slowest ever finisher at the Marathon<\/a>?\u00a0 This record belongs to firefighter Lloyd Scott, who in 2002 wore a 130lb antique deep-sea diving suit.
